Mendel Museum Visit

On Monday, we all took the No. 5 Trolly to the Mendel Museum at the Augustinian Abbey -- the Church is the Assumption of the Virgin Mary.

Mendel spent his adult life here, testing out his theories on genetics (a word that had not yet been invented), and also working on his meteorology studies, beer brewing, and serving as Abbot of the Abbey.  We were met at the Museum by Dr. Roman Hobza, who is with the Institute of Experimental Botany, and Michaela Jarkovska, the assistant director of the Mendel Museum, who very kindly opened up the museum for Mark's class -- usually, the area is closed on Mondays.

Here is the foundation where Mendel's greenhouse once stood -- the foundation survived, but not the building itself:

Mark conducted the first lecture, covering the discoveries that Mendel made with his cross-breeding experiments.  Roman gave the next lecture, discussing Czech 20th Century history and contributions by its scientists.  Michaela gave the last lecture, discussing Mendel's life.

We ate lunch at the Starnobrno Brewery Pub, which was the brewery that was associated with the Augustinian monastery that Mendel was the administrator of when it was first started in 1872.

Afterwards, Michaela took us around the Abbey and the beautiful church -- no cameras allowed in the church, but we could take photos of various small rooms in the Abbey:

The Museum has a gift shop.  Mark bought this T-Shirt --

Tuesday was a regular class day in the new class instruction building at Mendel University - This class was the very first being taught in the new building!  I'll post those photos tomorrow!
